Ceasefire in Zaporizhzhia: Russia and Ukraine halt offensive to allow repairs at nuclear plant

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General5 September 2026 at 10:53

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced this Saturday a temporary and localized ceasefire in the surroundings of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to allow repair work on the power line that supplies the facilities.

The ceasefire was agreed upon between Russia and Ukraine, which halted their offensives in the area of the nuclear plant. The truce is due to the need to repair the power line that supplies energy to the plant, which suffered a prolonged outage.

The power outage was caused by the cross-fire attacks between the two countries in the region. The situation generated international concern due to the risks associated with a nuclear plant in conflict.

The IAEA, led by Rafael Grossi, was responsible for mediating and announcing the agreement between the parties for this temporary humanitarian pause in hostilities.

Image of the day | The Mafra Station

The Mafra Station, located on the Oeste Line between Lisbon and Figueira da Foz, is about eight kilometres from the town of Mafra and preserves the nineteenth-century architecture typical of this centenary railway line. The most distinctive element of the station is its tile panels, created in 1934 by António de Castro Mourinho, Álvaro Pedro Gomes and Mário Salvador, depicting scenes from the region such as the Mafra Convent and the Tapada de Mafra. Forming part of a particular tradition of the Oeste Line, where several stations were decorated with tile panels, the Mafra Station represents an example of how this deeply Portuguese material was used to transform railway transit spaces into small galleries of folk art, constituting a living testament to an artistic and railway tradition that deserves to be preserved.
