Three Portuguese projects were identified as examples of a new generation of wildfire risk management strategies in the Mediterranean. The projects are FIZ, CARE, and Aldeia Segura/Pessoas Seguras, which are part of a set of ten Mediterranean initiatives recognized for this renewed approach.
These initiatives represent a shift in how the Mediterranean region prepares for fires, moving away from traditional methods and now prioritizing strategies more focused on landscape management.
The recognition of these three Portuguese projects comes in the context of a broader effort to redesign fire preparedness in the Mediterranean region, which has been particularly affected by extreme weather events and large-scale wildfires.
The projects stand out for addressing wildfire risk prevention and management in an integrated way, considering not only the operational aspects of firefighting but also community organization and the valorization of territories as fundamental elements for prevention.
