The Municipality of Ourém wants to charge a tourist tax of two euros per night from 2027, which has generated a conflict with the hotel industry and with the Sanctuary of Fátima. The proposal provides for two euros per guest and per night, up to a maximum of five nights, with exemptions for minors under 12 and for people with disabilities equal to or greater than 60%.
Hotel entrepreneurs oppose the measure, rejecting its implementation. The Sanctuary of Fátima was also unhappy with the proposal and even left open the possibility of closing bathrooms and parking lots, in a position of pressure against the municipality.
After threatening these measures, the Sanctuary backed down from its initial position. The conflict front thus brings together the municipality of Ourém, representatives of the hotel sector and the Sanctuary of Fátima itself, which is one of the main tourist attraction poles in the region.
