An earthquake of magnitude 1.8 was recorded in the early hours of this Saturday, at 02:24:25, northeast of Machico, in the autonomous region of Madeira. The seismic event occurred very close to the coast, in the Mar da Travessa area, near Ponta de São Lourenço.
The tremor had a depth of 64 kilometres, which characterises this event as a medium-depth earthquake. No material damage or casualties were reported.
Machico is a municipality located on the northeast coast of the island of Madeira, being the second oldest on the island. Ponta de São Lourenço is a rocky peninsula extending to the northeast, forming one of the easternmost points of the island.
This type of low-magnitude earthquake is relatively common in the region, which is close to an area of tectonic activity in the Atlantic.
