Witkoff and Kushner heading to Moscow and Kiev to try to advance peace negotiations

SAPO Notícias5 September 2026 at 10:02

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, envoys of United States President Donald Trump for negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, will travel this weekend to Moscow and Kiev to seek to advance peace efforts.

Steve Witkoff, who already visited Moscow in February, had a prolonged meeting with Vladimir Putin, during which he delivered a personal letter from President Trump to the Russian leader. This previous visit represented the first direct high-level interaction between the Trump administration and the Kremlin since the start of the war.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and former White House adviser, accompanies Witkoff on this diplomatic mission. Both represent the efforts of the American administration to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

The negotiations take place in a context of persistent search for a solution to the conflict that has lasted more than three years, with the United States assuming a central role in attempting to bring closer the positions of the two parties involved.

Image of the day | The Mafra Station

The Mafra Station, located on the Oeste Line between Lisbon and Figueira da Foz, is about eight kilometres from the town of Mafra and preserves the nineteenth-century architecture typical of this centenary railway line. The most distinctive element of the station is its tile panels, created in 1934 by António de Castro Mourinho, Álvaro Pedro Gomes and Mário Salvador, depicting scenes from the region such as the Mafra Convent and the Tapada de Mafra. Forming part of a particular tradition of the Oeste Line, where several stations were decorated with tile panels, the Mafra Station represents an example of how this deeply Portuguese material was used to transform railway transit spaces into small galleries of folk art, constituting a living testament to an artistic and railway tradition that deserves to be preserved.
