The new school year began in Mértola with the opening of a new school center, on Monday, with an investment of 2.5 million euros. The construction was promoted by the municipal council and had community support, representing, according to the municipal president, Mário Tomé, a determining investment for the future of the territory.
The new space follows an integrated education model, bringing together preschool through 12th grade in a single physical space. The municipality had been investing in educational centers in five localities throughout the council, with only Mértola remaining, where both preschool and primary education operated in old buildings that did not meet current requirements.
With capacity to accommodate more than 150 children in preschool and primary education, the center has eight activity rooms, a kitchenette, multi-activity rooms, a library and laboratory, as well as outdoor play spaces. The location allows for an integrated educational pathway from preschool through secondary and vocational education.
In the area of education, the municipal council also completed, in August, the expansion of Basic School 1 in São Miguel do Pinheiro, with an investment of 139,980 euros, with the construction of a new classroom to meet the growing number of students.
