Changes in sleep patterns, such as waking up during the night, difficulty falling asleep, and insomnia, are common situations among people over 60 years old. Although they are considered part of the natural aging process and multiple factors, these sleep changes need to be observed with attention, as they affect healthy brain maintenance.
A study published in the medical journal Neurology, from the American Academy of Neurology, revealed that people between 40 and 60 years old who have poor sleep nights may develop signs of brain aging. The results reinforce that sleep quality plays an important role in brain health throughout life.
In Brazil, about 8.5% of the population aged 60 or over lives with dementia, according to the National Report on Dementia, released by the Ministry of Health. The research suggests that changes in habits and diet before bed can contribute to a more peaceful sleep and, consequently, help in protecting memory and brain health.
