Quercus criticizes "irrational bet" on golf in the face of food crisis risk

SAPO Notícias5 September 2026 at 09:00

The environmental association Quercus criticized the expansion of golf courses in Portugal, classifying it as an "irrational bet" at a time when there are growing risks of food crisis. The organization warned of the need to stop the loss of agricultural land, especially given the challenges posed by climate change.

Quercus argued that the construction of new golf courses consumes precious water resources and occupies fertile soils that should be dedicated to food production. The association highlighted that Portugal faces significant challenges in food security and that it is necessary to protect national agriculture.

This position comes in a context of growing concern about the effects of climate change on agricultural production and debates about the sustainable use of natural resources. Quercus called for policies that prioritize food and sustainability over tourist projects that consume large amounts of water and land.
