Sanctuary of Fatima opposes tourist tax proposed by Ourém Municipality for visitors

Correio da Manhã5 September 2026 at 08:36

The Sanctuary of Fatima has spoken out against the tourist tax proposed by the Ourém Municipality for visitors to the sanctuary. This opposition arises in the context of a proposal by the municipality to implement a financial contribution from tourists who visit the site.

The Parish Council of Fatima indicated that it is closely following the entire process related to this issue. The local authority emphasized that it has not yet been contacted by the Municipality of Ourém to discuss or debate the matter of the tourist tax.

The position of the Sanctuary comes as a reaction to the initiative of the Municipal Council, creating an impasse between the two entities over how tourism financing in the region should be managed. The sanctuary, as the main tourist attraction in the municipality, plays a central role in this discussion.
