The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) revealed that it currently has only 17 records of people without assigned nationality. This number comes at a time when the institution has completed all the necessary adaptations to be able to confer the Stateless Status.
The Stateless Status entered into force this month, representing a significant change in the legal framework for these people in Portugal. AIMA has ensured it has prepared the internal procedures and infrastructure necessary to process these applications.
The creation of this status aims to address the situation of people who, for various reasons, do not hold the nationality of any country. This legal framework now allows Portugal to formally recognize and protect this vulnerable population.
