Madeira is today in the race for a place among the 21 candidates that will advance to the final phase of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal. The national semi-final takes place at the National Palace of Sintra and brings together 49 heritage sites from across the country.
The Madeira archipelago is represented by seven candidates, corresponding to one representative in each of the categories in competition. Machico competes with the Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, while Santana presents two candidates: the Roche Navio Cable Car and the Thatched Houses.
The list of Madeiran candidates also includes the Church of São, although the information in the article is incomplete regarding the full designation of this monument. The results of this elimination round will determine which heritage sites will advance to the final voting of the contest.
