The United Kingdom's Environment Secretary, Angela Eagle, asked Britons to start stockpiling food to prepare for the Super El Niño that is already beginning to form in the Pacific Ocean. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, the minister warned that the phenomenon could be the biggest in the last 1,000 years.
Eagle fears that El Niño will cause an overload of the country's emergency services. She stated that the phenomenon should bring drier summers and wetter winters, with more extreme storms in the United Kingdom.
The minister believes that El Niño could compromise the country's supply networks, including food. Therefore, she recommends that the population maintain a food stockpile that can sustain them until emergency services can reach them.
Eagle also warned that the phenomenon will cause much more damage in Asia, with devastating floods, and asked that the problem be taken seriously.
