Milei's political weapon, social media shows signs of wear, and Argentine loses engagement ahead of re-election bid

oglobo5 September 2026 at 04:00

Argentine President Javier Milei turned social media into a powerful political weapon to come to power in 2023. However, the wear of this digital machine exposes the challenges he faces in securing re-election next year.

Mentions of Milei on digital platforms fell to 3.7 million in June, representing a 72% reduction from the peak of 12.6 million recorded in February 2025, according to a report by consulting firm Ad Hoc.

Interactions with his posts on X, such as reposts and likes, dropped 62% since he took the Presidency. This decline reflects an increasingly drifting political discourse.

Economic advances have stalled, his legislative agenda faces obstacles, and corruption scandals have obscured the differences between Milei and his political adversaries, contributing to the drop in social media engagement.
