The Brazilian government created the National Fertilizer Program, called Profert, with the objective of increasing domestic fertilizer production in the country. The program establishes incentives for the domestic manufacturing of these essential agricultural products.
One of the main measures of Profert is the imposition of mandatory blending requirements that must progressively increase. This means that fertilizers sold in Brazil will need to contain a growing proportion of domestically produced components.
The initiative seeks to reduce Brazil's external dependence, which currently imports more than 80% of the fertilizers it consumes. This high import dependency represents a vulnerability for the Brazilian agricultural sector, one of the most important in the national economy.
