Area of the Leiria region that could host solar panels drops by two-thirds

Região de Leiria4 September 2026 at 21:00

The Government reduced by 64% the zones that were under public discussion within the scope of the Sectoral Program for Renewable Energy Deployment Acceleration Zones. The area in the Leiria region that could host solar panels dropped to about two-thirds of what was initially proposed.

The program, known as the "green map," was subject to criticism during the public discussion period. The objections presented called for the elimination or reduction of various zones identified for renewable energy installation.

The Leiria region was one of the most affected by this revision, losing a significant part of the territory that had been identified as potential for solar panel deployment.

The Executive ultimately accepted most of the criticism received during the public consultation, proceeding with substantial cuts to the areas initially proposed to host these renewable energy infrastructure projects.
