Petrobras received authorization from the Brazilian environmental regulator to drill up to three additional wells in the Amazon region. The decision represents a significant advance in oil exploration activities in the Amazon rainforest.
The authorization comes weeks after the Brazilian state-owned company announced the discovery of oil at the Morpho well, which generated great expectations in the national energy sector. The discovery was celebrated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who classified it as a "passport to the future".
The project contemplates drilling wells in the Amazon region, an area that has great environmental importance and that has been the subject of debate about the impacts of oil exploration in fragile ecosystems. The authorization from the environmental agency was considered a necessary step to continue exploration operations in the area.
