On September 1, 2026, the new European extratropical storm naming season began, which will run until August 31, 2027. This initiative is part of a joint coordination effort among various European meteorological services to assign names to the storms affecting the continent.
Portugal participates in this initiative through the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), joining the southwest group of countries responsible for storm designation. IPMA works together with the other partner meteorological services to define and publish the list of names that will be used during this season.
The storm naming system aims to facilitate public communication and raise public awareness about potentially dangerous weather conditions, allowing for better preparation and response to severe weather events.
