UN 'corrects' world maps to better reflect Africa's size

The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution, presented by Togo and supported by the African Union, that promotes a more accurate representation on world maps, particularly of Africa. The Mercator projection, used for centuries, distorts the sizes of continents, making Africa appear much smaller—when in reality it is about 14 times larger than Greenland. The resolution, approved with 164 votes in favor, one against (United States) and six abstentions, advocates for replacing it with the Equal Earth projection, which shows countries in proportional sizes. Togo argued that these distortions have caused significant consequences, contributing to an "unbalanced view" and affecting the "dignity of peoples". The USA harshly criticized the resolution, considering it "ridicules the work" of the UN and that it should focus on real problems of peace and prosperity. Implementation depends on the political will of member states, since General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding.
