BE says autonomy built bridges between the islands

Açoriano Oriental4 September 2026 at 17:28

Left Bloc celebrated Azores Autonomy Day with a speech by its sole deputy in the regional parliament, António Lima. During the address, the parliamentarian highlighted the importance of autonomy for the archipelago.

António Lima stated that autonomy "built the bridges" between the nine islands of the Azores. According to the deputy, this process made it possible to overcome the distance imposed by the "stormy channels that nature imposed" between the islands.

Left Bloc is represented by a single parliamentarian in the Legislative Assembly of the Azores. António Lima has been a critical voice in the region, but chose Autonomy Day to recognize the advances achieved by the autonomous status.

The autonomy of the Azores is a central theme in regional politics, having been won over several decades and representing an important milestone in the management of the archipelago's own affairs.
