His first known win was in 1993, when he received 10 thousand dollars on a scratch-off ticket, followed by prizes such as 13,696 dollars on Fantasy 5 in 1997 and approximately 842 thousand dollars on Mega Money in 2002. Over the years, he continued to win, including approximately 73 thousand dollars in 2008 and almost 99 thousand dollars in 2010.
His story became so well-known that Lustig published a book explaining the strategy he claimed to use. Among his main tips were avoiding automatic number selections, preferring to personally choose the combinations and keep them over time, playing consistently on the same games, and not limiting the choice to birthday dates, which restrict the available numbers to 31.
The American also insisted on a fundamental rule: never use money needed to pay essential expenses. He recommended setting a budget in advance for playing and accepting the possibility of losing that money, repeating that, to win, you have to play, but without putting your personal finances at risk.
However, there is no mathematical evidence that his methods increase the probability of winning in a random draw, since every valid combination has the same probability of being drawn. Furthermore, the total amount Lustig spent on tickets over the years he played is not known, which means that the story of his seven wins remains extraordinary, but does not prove the existence of a formula for winning the lottery.
