El Niño: 16 states and the Federal District have already sent data to the MMA for an integrated forest fire prevention and combat plan

oglobo4 September 2026 at 15:04

Sixteen Brazilian states, in addition to the Federal District, have already sent information to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change for the mapping of priority areas for forest fire prevention and combat actions. The objective is to create an integrated prevention plan to face the dry season, when fires tend to intensify.

The intensification of forest fires is directly related to the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon. The climate pattern alters atmospheric conditions and contributes to extending the dry season in several regions of Brazil.

On Thursday, the World Meteorological Organization, linked to the UN, reported that El Niño is "firmly established" and should increase its effects in the coming months. The phenomenon is expected to reach "very strong" intensity, with a probability "close to 100%" of lasting until February 2027.
