A large sinkhole on Rua do Coteiro, in Idanha, has been restricting traffic for about three months, according to reports from local residents. The collapse, which apparently started with small dimensions, progressively grew larger and is currently surrounded by barriers, occupying part of the traffic lane and forcing drivers to go around it.
Augusto Silva, a local resident, explains that the problem began when several trucks traveled along that street to transport earth to a nearby plot. According to him, one of the structures existing beneath the road apparently gave way, causing a small opening to appear on the pavement. As weeks went by, the situation worsened.
The resident recounts that when he noticed the hole was widening, he placed a red water jug filled with water as a way to signal the danger to drivers, since at that time there was no protection whatsoever. Augusto Silva warns that, without this improvised signalling, a light vehicle could have had problems passing through the location.
