The United Kingdom reaffirmed this Friday that the Falkland Islands are British, in response to statements by Argentine President Javier Milei that there are winds of change favorable to Buenos Aires' claim over the archipelago. The British position was expressed after American President Donald Trump said he does not rule out reviewing the traditional US neutrality position on the dispute.
Milei made a national broadcast address in which he celebrated Trump's statement, characterizing it as a warning to London. The Argentine president stated that the American position represents a significant change and that Trump's call should not be seen as harmless.
The two countries fought in 1982 a ten-week war over the South Atlantic archipelago, a British overseas territory located 600 kilometers off the Argentine coast. Argentines refer to the islands as Falklands (Malvinas), while the British have maintained control of the territory since the conflict.
