Government announces 12 million euros to support winegrowers

The Portuguese Government announced support of 12 million euros for winegrowers in the Douro region who cannot sell their production this campaign. The Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, explained that this is a one-off solution for this year, different from the distillation support of previous years, and that for the future the creation of a permanent fund to manage market fluctuations is planned. The support is justified by the unique characteristics of the region, where substitution by another crop is very difficult. The sales problems worsened this year, with winegrowers complaining about the lack of buyers and the low prices paid for grapes, with even a symbolic protest with grapes being dumped in the street.
