Spain calls for reform of EU climate resilience with stricter rules and new funds

Euronews Portugal4 September 2026 at 14:25

Spain asked the European Union to transform climate resilience into a binding and EU-funded policy. The country considers it necessary to establish stricter rules to face climate challenges.

Brussels is the main recipient of this request, being the institution responsible for defining EU policies. Spain wants climate resilience measures to no longer be merely recommendations and to become mandatory.

To finance this transformation, Madrid admits the creation of new European taxes. Among the options considered are taxes on oil and gas profits, which could generate significant revenue for the Community budget.

Almost 20% of PSP officers are of pre-retirement age (but cannot enjoy this right)

Almost 20% of Public Security Police (PSP) officers are of pre-retirement age, but cannot enjoy this right. This year, only 900 officers will be able to access pre-retirement, a number lower than in previous years, which has been subject to criticism by the professionals' union. The situation reflects a crisis in the transition system to retirement within the PSP, leaving many officers in a limbo position between active service and retirement.
