Jorge Carvalho fears return to the "Europe of States"

dnoticias.pt4 September 2026 at 13:45

The president of the Funchal Municipal Council, Jorge Carvalho, warned of the risk of the European Union moving towards greater concentration of powers in the member states, considering that this situation represents a threat to the role of regions and municipalities in managing EU funds. The warning was issued during a debate held yesterday in Santa Cruz.

Jorge Carvalho considered that a "process of returning to the middle of the States" is underway, expressing his concern about the direction the European Union is taking in terms of power concentration.

The mayor argued that autonomous regions must preserve the principle of subsidiarity, which determines that decisions should be made at the level closest to citizens, and ensure effective intervention in managing European funds.

The debate in Santa Cruz thus served as a platform for Jorge Carvalho to express his concerns about the future of European governance and the need to defend the interests of regions in the context of the European Union.

The mayor guaranteed that the works are completed or nearing completion, with approximately 90% of the construction work carried out, which ensures the maintenance of financial support. During the executive meeting, the PSD councilor questioned the execution rate and whether there would be charges for the municipal budget, to which Hélio Fazendeiro responded negatively.

Telle, who was the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, will immediately take over leadership of the largest branch of the American Armed Forces. The appointment was announced on social media platform Truth Social, where Trump described Telle as a "great patriot" and Pete Hegseth stated he will be an "immediate asset" to the country. Driscoll's dismissal came after months of disagreements with Hegseth, especially regarding Army modernization and mass dismissals of officers, including the former branch chief, Randy George. The article also mentions that Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was removed from the Pentagon over alleged disputes with Hegseth regarding naval fleet renewal plans.
