The 2027 Met Gala is without a theme, without an exhibition and with time running out. Eight months from the event, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art needs to replace "John Galliano: Horizons," the retrospective dedicated to the British designer that was canceled. The museum and John Galliano announced on August 31st that the project would not move forward.
The cancellation came after widespread criticism of the anti-Semitic and racist comments the creator made in 2011, as well as opposition from political leaders, Jewish organizations and museum donors. The controversy over the exhibition theme became a significant reputational problem for the institution.
The Met has not yet revealed what the new exhibition will be or confirmed whether the 2027 gala will maintain the traditional format. The institution limited itself to stating that it would announce a new exhibition and news about the gala "soon."
With just eight months until the scheduled event date, the Costume Institute faces the challenge of conceiving a new theme from scratch, something that typically requires more than a year of planning. The uncertainty also leaves in doubt the guests and sponsors who may already be preparing their looks for the most important night on the fashion calendar.
