Scammers impersonate the bishop of Viana and attempt to deceive 100 priests

Scammers contacted approximately 100 priests from the Diocese of Viana do Castelo, impersonating Bishop D. João Lavrador through urgent messages requesting financial help or information about parishes. The recipients grew suspicious and contacted the bishop, who issued a warning on social media. The Diocese believes the data was obtained through the Catholic Yearbook, where contacts are public, and not from a cyberattack. There is no record of priests being harmed, but the Diocese asks that no one respond to suspicious messages in the bishop's name. This is the second time this year that someone has attempted to use D. João Lavrador's identity, after a fake profile on Facebook in April.
