Nine doctors from the emergency department at D. Estefânia hospital submitted their resignation. All the healthcare professionals involved reported a lack of conditions to ensure the service.
The situation reflects a broader crisis in the health sector in Portugal. The Minister of Health publicly acknowledged the shortage of anesthesiologist doctors in various regions of the country.
This lack of professionals has been compromising the functioning of hospital emergency departments. The doctors who resigned indicate that they do not have the conditions to guarantee adequate care for patients.
