DECO, through its Consumer Clinic, provides guidance for those wishing to rent a vehicle during holidays. The main recommendation is to use only authorized companies, whose contacts can be found on the IMT (Institute of Mobility and Transport) website.
The article emphasizes that a rental contract must be signed, which can be done in person at the company's counter, at a travel agency, or remotely, by telephone or over the Internet. This contract must contain all relevant information, including vehicle identification, the total price, additional services and other information about the rental.
At the time of vehicle delivery, the consumer should receive the vehicle registration document, the insurance policy certificate, a copy of the rental contract and, where applicable, the inspection report. It is also important to carefully inspect the vehicle and request a written statement of any problems found, such as scratches or dents, as well as to check the fuel level to avoid incorrect charges.
In case of an accident, the rent-a-car company is obligated to provide a 24-hour assistance service. If the company fails to meet its obligations, the consumer should use the Complaints Book, contact the European Consumer Centre (if the problem occurs in Europe) or, in Portugal, approach DECO.
