Spain's National Transplant Organization (ONT) and the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), through its Microbiota Study Group (GEMBIOTA), issued a warning this Friday about the potential risks of acquiring or using preparations or capsules made from human fecal matter outside authorized channels. These substances are being sold among private individuals to restore the intestinal microbiota.
The specialists warn that consuming these fecal capsules is neither safe nor effective. The practice consists of using processed human fecal matter in the form of tablets or preparations, supposedly with the aim of improving intestinal health through the restoration of the microbiota.
The ONT and SEIMC highlight that these treatments should not be obtained through unauthorized channels, as they represent significant health risks for users. The warning comes in the context of a growing popularity of procedures related to fecal microbiota transplants outside the controlled clinical environment.
