Coimbra, Mealhada and Cantanhede want to create a large business corridor in the Centre

Campeão das Províncias4 September 2026 at 12:15

The municipalities of Coimbra, Mealhada and Cantanhede are preparing a joint proposal to create a Large Business Hosting Area along the axis between the three municipalities, transforming it into an industrial, logistics and railway corridor of national dimension. The initiative comes within the challenge launched by the Government for the creation of six large business areas in the country intended for the installation of multinational companies.

The president of the Coimbra City Council, Ana Abrunhosa, announced that the municipality will present a candidacy to the PTRR – Portugal Transformation, Recovery and Resilience for a large industrial zone in the area of Souselas. The proposed location benefits from its proximity to the A1, IP3 and IC2, as well as the Northern Line and the Beira Alta Line, with emphasis on the Pampilhosa railway node.

In Mealhada, the Pampilhosa Logistics Platform is pointed out as complementary infrastructure to the future business area. The proposal also includes articulation with the ports of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz, with the objective of connecting the companies established in the territory to national and international logistics chains.

The three municipalities are consolidating technical information regarding the area of intervention, infrastructure conditions, energy capacity, accessibility, land availability and business demand. António Jorge Franco highlighted that this is an excellent opportunity to gain dimension and scale and meet the demands of a new generation of industry in Central Portugal. The project will be presented within the scope of the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region.
