José Egídio de Sousa Monteiro passed away in Madeira. He was former president of the Portuguese Center of Caracas, in Venezuela, having dedicated a large part of his life to the Portuguese community in that country. The death occurred in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, where he had returned a few years ago after a long stay as an emigrant in Venezuela. José Egídio de Sousa Monteiro was from the parish of Loreto, Arco da Calheta, and lived in Santa Maria Maior, in Funchal. His death represents the loss of a prominent figure in the Portuguese diaspora in Venezuela and the Madeiran community.
