Estremoz celebrated the centenary of its elevation to city with a ceremony that combined homage to the past and reflection on future challenges. The event began with a tribute to the doctor and local politician José Lourenço Marques Crespo, during which a floral wreath was laid at his bust, accompanied by the City Anthem performed by the Banda da Sociedade Filarmónica Artística Estremocense.
The main ceremony took place at the Town Hall and counted with the presence of the Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Castro Almeida. The speeches evoked Estremoz's historical journey and pointed to the future, identifying housing, water, and urban recovery as the main challenges to face.
The fireworks closed the celebrations, symbolizing the passing of the baton between the generations that built the city and those who will develop it. Alentrium.pt covered and reported on the event.
