The European Commission has formed a new alliance to bring together maritime manufacturers, shipowners, downstream users, EU Member States, investors, and social partners with the aim of strengthening Europe's maritime industrial and technological sovereignty. The maritime industry is considered a fundamental pillar for the continent's economic security and strategic autonomy.
The alliance aims to create business cases that help expand European production in market segments and technologies relevant to the EU's industrial base. It also intends to address the needs of navigation, ports, and other maritime sectors, especially in strategic markets capable of strengthening the continent's manufacturing capacity.
Among the objectives of the initiative are the promotion of targeted investments, public-private synergies, and industrial collaborations aimed at joint actions and concrete projects. The alliance seeks to comprehensively address the sector's market, trade, and competitiveness challenges.
A call for applications has been published, inviting interested parties to participate in the initiative by meeting eligibility criteria and committing to the alliance's objectives. Applications will remain open on a rolling basis, with a first cutoff date of October 16, 2026.
