A genetically modified pig kidney functioned for 271 days in the body of Tim Andrews, 66, in the United States. The patient had end-stage kidney disease caused by type 2 diabetes and received the pig organ on January 25, 2025. Throughout the entire period, he did not need dialysis.
The case was revisited by the medical journal The Lancet and is considered by the doctors responsible for the procedure the longest period ever recorded up to that point for a pig kidney transplant functioning in a human patient.
Tim Andrews was highlighted almost two years after the initial surgery, when doctors analyzed the results of the transplant and confirmed the exceptional duration of the functioning of the genetically modified organ in the human organism.
