Cultural Alliance between Alentejo and Extremadura Takes Shape Through the University of Évora

Rádio Campanário4 September 2026 at 09:27

The University of Évora is driving the creation of a cross-border cultural network between the Alentejo and Spanish Extremadura, called "A Fronteira da Cultura" (The Border of Culture). The project already has more than two dozen member institutions and entities, with this number expected to reach around 30 in the first phase.

An important milestone was the working meeting held on August 31st between Antonio Sáez Delgado, Vice-Rector for Culture and Society at UÉ, and Ignacio Gragera, Mayor of Badajoz. The Spanish official confirmed the municipality's commitment to the initiative, reinforcing the cross-border dimension of the alliance. The founding meeting is scheduled for the second fortnight of October.

The cultural corridor should link Cáceres, Mérida, Badajoz, Elvas, Estremoz and Évora, taking advantage of the geographical proximity between these territories. Among the objectives are the creation of joint initiatives, greater circulation of artists and researchers, and applying for European funding for partnership projects.

The initiative aims to transform the peripheral position of the Alentejo and Extremadura into a strategic advantage, connecting two important cultural moments: Évora 2027 as European Capital of Culture and the candidacy of Cáceres for 2031. The idea was first publicly presented in July, during a flamenco show at the Colégio do Espírito Santo.
