Vila Viçosa's candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage took another step forward with the submission of the "Vila Viçosa – Ducal Seat" dossier to the Regional Coordination and Development Commission of Alentejo. The document was submitted by the Mayor of Vila Viçosa, Inácio Esperança, to the Vice-President of CCDR Alentejo, Henrique Sim-Sim, responsible for the Culture portfolio, during a working meeting held on Wednesday, September 2.
The meeting served to review the status of the candidacy process, currently under development, and also allowed for discussion of ongoing heritage enhancement projects in the municipality, as well as the main interventions planned under the Management Plan associated with the candidacy.
The strategy aims to strengthen the protection and enhancement of Vila Viçosa's heritage, highlighting the historical and cultural importance of the former seat of the House of Braganza and the heritage ensemble associated with the town. The candidacy seeks to establish the municipality in the national and international context and strengthen its projection as a cultural destination.
The submission of the dossier represents another step in a process aimed at bringing Vila Viçosa's heritage to UNESCO recognition and consolidating its importance on the European cultural and heritage map. The Municipal Council highlights the collaboration of CCDR Alentejo in initiatives aimed at promoting and enhancing the region's heritage and culture.
