Goodbye SEAT, hello Cupra. Volkswagen prepares to end the brand by 2029

ZAP Notícias4 September 2026 at 08:30

Volkswagen is considering gradually ending the SEAT brand by 2029, according to an internal document obtained by the German business newspaper WirtschaftsWoche. According to the document, the SEAT brand will be discontinued in an orderly manner and with cost optimization, no later than the end of the decade. This decision marks a return to the scenario that had been dismissed three years ago, when ZAP reported that the brand would not disappear.

Volkswagen's strategy involves betting everything on Cupra, which will become the group's main brand in the affordable vehicle segment. At the same time, the company may cut up to 100,000 jobs as part of this restructuring.

The electric ID.EVERY1 appears to ensure that the Autoeuropa factory in Palmela is not affected by major turbulence. This model is expected to be produced at this Portuguese facility, ensuring the continuity of production at the Portuguese factory.

The return of the possibility of SEAT's extinction comes after years of uncertainty about the future of the Spanish brand, which was once at risk of disappearing from the European market.

Portugal's (limited) shield against rising interest rates

Portugal managed to reduce its public debt by more than a third over the past six years, which, combined with the fact that only a small portion of the debt is subject to rising interest rates, creates significant protection against higher financing costs. These two factors act as "shields" that mitigate the impact of rising interest rates on the Portuguese economy. According to the analysis, Portugal's central problem is no longer convincing markets of its fiscal discipline; rather, a different underlying issue is what the country now faces.
