68 governments in 80 years. This Friday, Meloni beats Berlusconi and makes history in Italy

SAPO Notícias4 September 2026 at 08:00

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reached a historic milestone by making her executive the longest uninterrupted government in Italy since World War II. Meloni's government surpassed the 1,412 days of Berlusconi's second government, which was in office between June 2001 and April 2005.

With this achievement, the executive led by Meloni completed more than 80 years of Italian republican history, during which 68 different governments were recorded. This recurring political instability has always been a characteristic of the Italian political system.

The milestone was reached this Friday, when Meloni's government officially surpassed the duration of Silvio Berlusconi's second executive. The feat represents a historic moment for Italian politics, considering the context of frequent government changes that have marked the country in recent decades.

Meloni took office in October 2022, becoming the first woman to lead the Italian government. Her executive, supported by the parties Brothers of Italy, League and Forza Italia, managed to remain stable for longer than any other government since the post-war period.
