SNS users wait up to six months for a psychologist: Order warns of "unsustainable" situation

Users of the National Health Service (SNS) face wait times of up to six months to get an appointment with a psychologist. The Order of Psychologists warned of a situation it classifies as "unsustainable" in responding to the mental health needs of the Portuguese population.

Currently, the SNS has approximately 1,200 psychologists across the country. Of these professionals, about 500 work in primary healthcare, another 500 are assigned to hospitals, and the remaining ones work in public sector projects.

This number of professionals is considered insufficient to meet the growing demand for mental health care. The Order of Psychologists has been alerting health authorities to the need to strengthen human resources in this area.
