The debt of Minas Gerais with the Union is seen as a central topic in the debates that guide the state gubernatorial election, generating divergences among the candidates competing for the Liberty Palace.
The contenders are divided between criticism of the terms agreed upon by the administration of former governor Romeu Zema (Novo), who is running for President of the Republic, for joining the Full State Debt Payment Program (Propag), and proposals for new agreements to be discussed with the federal government.
Despite presenting proposals, the candidates do not provide details about the solutions in their government plans.
A report sent by the State Treasury Secretary in February to the National Treasury pointed out that Minas began 2026 in debt of R$ 187 billion to the Union.
