US elections kick off this Friday: first ballots sent to military and citizens abroad

SAPO Notícias4 September 2026 at 07:36

The elections in the United States officially begin this Friday, with the first ballots being sent to the military and American citizens abroad. This milestone marks the official start of the electoral process that will take place in November.

The November elections will renew all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the American Congress. Simultaneously, about one-third of the seats in the Senate, the upper chamber, will be elected.

This electoral process takes place in a context of political tension in the United States, with the Democratic and Republican parties preparing for an intense battle for the majority in both chambers of Congress. Americans abroad and military personnel constitute a significant segment of voters who receive their ballots early.
