Argentine President Javier Milei claimed Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands during an official address. The Argentine leader reaffirmed Argentina's historic position on the territory, which is currently controlled by the United Kingdom.
As part of this démarche, Milei announced the creation of a naval base in the city of Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina. The new base will reinforce Argentina's military presence in the region and demonstrate the government's commitment to defending sovereign interests in the area.
Additionally, the president announced that sanctions will be imposed on companies operating in the Falkland Islands without authorization from the Argentine government. The measure aims to economically pressure activities that the country considers illegitimate in the contested territory.
