Representatives from the group of Least Developed Countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change met in Dili, Timor-Leste, until the day the news was published. The meeting aimed to prepare a joint position for COP31, the next United Nations conference on climate change.
The group made an appeal for COP31 to achieve concrete results in several fundamental areas. Among the highlighted priorities are climate change mitigation, adaptation to its effects, climate financing, and losses and damages caused by extreme climate phenomena.
The Least Developed Countries are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, despite being the least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. These countries have historically pressured for more ambitious commitments from developed nations in international climate negotiations.
The meeting in Timor-Leste also served to strengthen the unity of the bloc in international negotiations and ensure that the specific needs of the most vulnerable countries are prioritized in the global climate agreement that may be reached at COP31.
