Taiwan denounces China's "political persecution" against Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong

Taiwan denounced today the "political persecution" of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong. The Taiwanese government strongly criticized mainland China's actions against the young activist, considering them an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Joshua Wong pleaded guilty on Wednesday to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, a crime under the National Security Law imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong. This charge can result in life imprisonment for the activist.

Wong is one of the most well-known leaders of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, having gained international prominence during the 2014 Umbrella Movement protests. Over the years, he has become a symbolic figure of the struggle for civil liberties in the territory.

The charge against Wong is part of a series of legal proceedings initiated after Beijing imposed the National Security Law in 2020, which according to critics has been used to suppress political opposition in Hong Kong.
