Milei hardens dispute over the Falklands with sanctions and new naval base

CNN Portugal4 September 2026 at 06:21

Argentine President Javier Milei announced he will sign a decree to accelerate the application of sanctions against companies operating in the Falklands, also covering their shareholders, executives, and suppliers. The measure represents a hardening of Argentina's diplomatic posture regarding the Falkland Islands issue.

The decision includes the construction of a new naval base in the region, strengthening Argentina's military presence in the South Atlantic. The government thus seeks to pressure the United Kingdom to resume negotiations over the sovereignty of the islands, which have been interrupted for decades.

The dispute over the Falklands is a historic theme in Argentine politics, with Argentina claiming sovereignty over the islands it considers its ancestral territory. The armed conflict of 1982 between the two countries, which resulted in Argentina's defeat, remains an open wound in the national memory.
