Timor-Leste's National Police (PNTL) recorded over a thousand cases of domestic violence through the month of August, according to data released by the police corporation. The number represents a significant volume of incidents in a society that has been facing this problem persistently.
The information was provided by Chief Inspector Ricardo da Costa, who heads the Prevention, Socialisation and Awareness Section of the Vulnerable Persons Unit (VPU). This police unit is responsible for dealing with crimes involving groups considered more vulnerable, including domestic violence cases.
The PNTL data shows that domestic violence continues to be a serious problem in Timor-Leste, with the police having identified and recorded over a thousand incidents during the first eight months of the year. The announcement of these figures comes in the context of efforts by the Timorese authorities to raise awareness and prevent this form of criminality.
