"Avante!" Festival: 50 years of music, books, art and unlikely encounters

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 23:01

The Avante! Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, establishing itself as a cultural event that over five decades has built a unique identity in Portugal. The festival takes place on September 4, 5 and 6, in Atalaia.

The event stands out for congregating diverse artistic expressions, including music, literature, theatre, cinema, visual arts and politics. This blend of languages and disciplines has been the festival's distinctive mark since its founding.

Before large festivals became a widespread phenomenon in Portugal, the Avante! Festival was already experimenting with a formula based on diversity. The festival managed to bring together very different audiences and artists from the most varied currents, creating unlikely encounters in a culturally rich environment.

Over fifty years, the event has been a space of convergence between culture and political intervention, remaining a reference in the Portuguese festival scene for its ability to mix generations, styles and artistic sensibilities.
