Copper wire theft: data shows R$ 69 million loss to Rio in five years

The theft of copper wires caused a loss of more than R$ 69 million to the public coffers of Rio de Janeiro between 2021 and 2025. The Traffic Engineering Company (CET-Rio) registered the theft of almost 500 kilometers of traffic signal cables, resulting in losses of R$ 27 million. Meanwhile, RioLuz, responsible for public lighting, accounted for losses of R$ 42 million, with more than 1.8 kilometers of copper cables stolen in the period.

To combat the problem, security forces and the Rio City Hall carried out on Wednesday (2) the first operational action of the Integrated Center for Combating Theft and Receiving of Copper Cables and Wiring. The operation focused on scrapyards that may act in receiving the stolen material.
